What to Expect During the Evaluation?

At Family Eye Wellness, our goal is to thoroughly understand how your or your child’s visual system is functioning—not just how clearly you see, but how the eyes work together, how they focus, track, and process visual information.

Before a Functional Vision Evaluation, a Comprehensive Eye Exam is typically required. This ensures that the health of the eyes and visual acuity have been assessed before diving into functional and perceptual testing.

We are happy to perform the Comprehensive Eye Exam at our office if you do not have a primary care Optometrist. If you’ve had one done within the past year, we ask that your primary eye doctor send the records to us in advance.

New Patients to Our Office

If you’re new to Family Eye Wellness, your evaluation process includes several steps:

1. Comprehensive Eye Exam (CEE)

  • Must be completed within one year of the functional vision exam.
  • Can be done at our office or by your current eye doctor (records must be sent to us beforehand).

2. Functional Vision Evaluation (FVE)

  • Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours
  • This in-depth assessment looks at eye teaming, tracking, focusing, convergence, and other key visual skills.
  • Includes a detailed review of symptoms and functional vision concerns.

3. Visual Processing Evaluation

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Focuses on visual memory, visual discrimination, laterality/directionality, and other higher-level visual processing skills that impact reading and learning

4. Parent/Doctor Consultation

  • We schedule a follow-up consultation to review all results and provide customized treatment recommendations, including whether vision therapy may be helpful.
